My inspiration comes from the combination of colour and geometry. A recurring theme is the visual struggle between the horizontal and the vertical. We are vertical animals living in an essentially horizontal world and many of our human problems seem to stem from our continuing attempts to dominate our environment. This theme, in addition to its purely visual aspect, can also be seen as representing the relationship between the sexes (verticality being representative of the male and horizontality the female).
I frequently use the symbol of a square, both as a compositional device, as well as a distinct form, where the horizontal and the vertical are in harmony. I try to produce images which embody a feeling of harmony and calm as an antidote to our increasingly frenetic world.
I work between France and the UK. My main studio is in the hamlet of St. Roman, located in the foothills of the Cevennes mountains. My UK studio is in Marlow, a pretty town on the Thames in Buckinghamshire.
I work in Acrylic generally, as these paints dry quickly and enable me to build up layers of paint without having to wait for days. Texture is important and I frequently use thin paper (stuck on to the canvas) or ground ochre, gathered from an ochre deposit near my house in France, mixed into the paint, to provide this.
I am often asked about the persistent use of the square in my paintings. In response, I wrote a short article which documents the use of The Square in art, starting with the Babylonians, who first worked out the mathematical geometry of the right angle. This ability was copied by the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and subsequent European cultures and used in their architecture. The use of geometry as a compositional device passed then to easel painting by the Renaissance painters and onwards until Casimir Malevich’s Black Square of 1915 achieved perhaps the ultimate expression of the form.
My work merely continues in this tradition.
